Atlantic Salmon

Steeped in rich angling history and woven into the fabric of New Brunswick’s culture is The Atlantic Salmon.

These silver beauties migrate to and from the pristine northern rivers of NB and the vast cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean multiple times in their lifespan and it is truly something special for an angler to hook up with, what many refer to as “the leaper” due to their aerial displays.

Some general information about the seasons and locations are as follows:

Two people fishing, each holding a large fish, with a dog in the water nearby, on a cloudy day by the river.

Conservation efforts are diligent and there are many regulations to consider when booking a trip for Atlantic Salmon.

Non NB residents are required to fish with a guide for Atlantic salmon.

Salmon fishing in NB is strictly catch and release and on the Fly only but don’t let that stop you from crossing this majestic species off your bucket list. NBFG can set you up for success and a learning experience on the water!

Trolling is acceptable in the spring months which is a fantastic way for new comers to hook up with a silver bullet of a fish.

From April 15 until May 15 the Miramichi River is open to boating trips and typically fish are caught higher numbers while targeting the salmon that have wintered in the river. (The brook trout fishing is exceptional as May begins as well!)

All waters of the Miramichi are open and accessible to angling with all guides and their guests during this time. Most angling is done from a boat though fish are often caught from foot while wading as well.

Expect outside temperatures to be in the 40 to 50f range in April and into the 60-70f range in May as spring is in the air!

As the fresh “bright” fish return from the ocean in June, the summer salmon season begins and the runs continue until October 15.

During the summer and fall season, angling is done from foot while wading and it is expected that there will be hot water closures during July:August and September.

It would be best to plan your summer salmon trips during June, late September and October
